Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in The Hound Of The Baskervilles Paper There are five main points I am going to explain about the different aspects of Holmes and Watsons relationship and how each point adds to the enjoyment of the novel. The first obvious main point to start with is that the book is Holmes biography. All the Sherlock Holmes books are all about what Watson does with Holmes on their cases and at home before and after each case. This particular tale however, is not only based at home and in one other place, its based on a few different places like Devonshire, Coombe Tracey etc. Watson always tells the storyline, as he is the biographer of these cases and of Sherlock Holmes life. This is evidence of the books authenticity, as this could physically happen in real life. As well as this being the biography of Sherlock Holmes, it is also an autobiography for Watson. It is shown in this book especially, as there are a few chapters where Holmes is not in the book itself, only written to by Watson. We see this point right at the beginning of the book, when it says Mr Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions when he stayed up all night, was seated at the breakfast table. This shows us that Watson has been around Holmes for a while as he even knows and writes what time Holmes wakes up in the morning. The bizarre relationship between Watson and Holmes is shown especially when Holmes is listening to Watson saying what he thinks of the stick, letting Watson think hes getting it all right when actually Holmes has a completely different answer. Another time Conan Doyle adds to their friendship is by telling us the extent of which they know each other. For when I see the stub of a cigarette marked Bradley, Oxford Street, I know that my friend Watson is in the neighbourhood. This shows us how much Holmes knows about Watson. He knows that he smokes and even which brand he smokes. By using the word friend he also is explaining that it is because of his friendship, that he is able to recognize it being Watsons stub. This could also mean that this brand was not such a popular type of cigarette and Holmes knew that Watson did in fact actually like it. This makes the book extremely enjoyable to read by allowing us to see a friendship that is so realistic that its like we are actually there. No friendship is perfect and there is, like theirs, a very competitive side to any friendship. There are points in the book when we see how much Watson actually trusts Holmes. This is shown especially right at the beginning of the book, when Holmes goes to wake up Watson. This proves that Holmes is allowed to enter Watsons room and is also allowed to wake him up at any time he wants. The third main point is that they are both partners in the work of investigation and although they are only work partners, we feel at home since they are still friends and its a pleasant environment to be in. Although they are close friends, we do see that they are still work partners as every time they sit down to drink a cup of tea, they are always talking about the case that they are currently dealing with, rather than a joke that someone said in a pub last night, for example. Holmes and Watson do not have equal positions in the job that they work in. Holmes is more of the solver and does not go out to explore. He uses his mental knowledge rather than his physical capabilities as he says in chapter one I have been to Devonshire in spirit we see from here that Holmes is a man of much intellect and can picture things in his head without actually leaving the place where hes at. Watson, on the other hand, is the explorer or the worker, the man who does all the physical work, searching for clues. Holmes still thinks of Watson as an amazing detective and very important to every case he does, as he mentions twice in the book about Watson being the man of action (page 140) and also him being there at the hour of action (page 30) this is showing us how Holmes is the superior one and Watson is inferior the pair. This also provides us with entertainment whilst reading this book because we see that Holmes is a man of much intellect and a controlling genius and its as if Watson is almost running behind him saying wait up, I know what the answer is although he actually has got the wrong side of the stick. Both detectives need and value each others help in this work and it is enjoyable to watch them working together to figure out the case. There is within the friendship of Holmes and Watson an aspect of Master and Apprentice or Schoolmaster and Pupil. This is shown a lot throughout the book; especially in Chapter One when Watson is saying what he thinks has happened to the stick and how old it is. Holmes sits and listens and occasionally comments, good or excellent. This shows how Holmes is treating Watson like a schoolchild who has just answered a question correctly. Also when Holmes makes a right deduction, he says the deduction so matter-of-factly, almost like hes trying to teach him the way to work it out, for example when Holmes says Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods. Apply them! and also when he says as to the latter part he says this as if the answer is obvious and why would anyone think different! This is another element that adds humour to this incredible book. It does this by making the story sound like two people, one who is literally always being bossed around by the other and yet he still follows the bossy one about. At one point of the book, though, we see that Watson is offended and he says, Then you use me, and yet do not trust me. But as a whole we know that Watson and Holmes are very friendly with each other and each one doesnt mind the other ones faults. The construction of the story is written in a narrative point- this is the final point I wish to raise in this essay and is quite different to the other elements previously written in this book the narrator is actually the sidekick; Using a sidekick is a very useful thing for an author whilst writing a book or making a film about detectives. The vast majority of all detectives have one or more sidekicks. We see in G. k Chestertons books there are always Father Brown and his sidekick Flambeau. In Agatha Christies detective stories there is always Hercule Poirut and Colonel Hastings. All these amazing detective stories have the common denominator of a sidekick. Having a sidekick enables the author, in this case, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to control the flow of the information that gets passed to the audience. Sometimes an author can use this technique to create an irony in the story or the other way round just to confuse the readers. Sometimes by having a sidekick, it can even make people feel they are in the story by letting the readers find out something very crucial to the storyline at the same time as the characters. When they found out that the dog had killed Selden instead of Sir Henry was an exciting and relieving part of the book where one felt the same as the characters. When they found out who it was who was trying to kill Sir Henry or even at the time when Mr and Mrs Stapleton were found out not to be brother and sister. All of the times, we experience similar feeling to the narrator. It can also help to display the emotions between Holmes and Watson at different times throughout the book. Watson becoming angry in the middle of the book because of something he had not found out that Holmes had known is an example of when the relationship of Holmes and Watson gets a bit tangled up. There are lots of different aspects of the relationship between Holmes and Watson. All these aspects have been thought about before writing the book and this is what makes the book so enjoyable.

Auto World Inc Essay Auto World Inc. (AWI) is a leading automotive retail and service chain. They have many operating segments comprised of two different centers 10 miles apart from each other. Pit Stop Centers (PSC) offer service labor, installed merchandise, and tires while their Auto Boyz Centers (ABC) sells automotive merchandise. AWI has a plan to close their operating segment PSC to change their current operating structure to improve and efficiently deliver retail products and automotive services by providing their customers with a ‘one stop’ shopping for ‘do-it-yourself’ retail customers and ‘do-it-for-me’ customers† (PSC Case). AWI expects this change to enhance their ability to increase market share, improve sales, and company earnings. This change in restructuring will have an effect on current earnings and will need to be reported properly in their 2007 Income Statement. AWI must report this continuing activity properly under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The FASB Accounting Standards Codification (ASC), commonly known as GAAP has specific standards that must be followed in order to classify the disposal of an entity as discontinued or continues operation of a component of an entity. Under the guidance of numerous ASC’s, AWI does not meet the two conditions to report their PSC closures as discontinued operations. The criteria used, assessment period, presentation, and disclosure for this retail company will be explained in detail when applying proper GAAP. A component of an entity comprises operations and cash flows that can be clearly distinguished, operationally and for financial reporting purposes, from the rest of the entity; it may be a reportable segment or an operating segment, a reporting unit, a subsidiary, or an asset group in which Auto World determined correctly under the first requirement that the PSC met the definition of a â€Å"component of an entity† (ASC 205-20-20). The two conditions for reporting the disposed transaction as discontinued operations are: The results of operations of a component of an entity that either has been disposed of or is classified as held for sale under the requirements of paragraph 360-10-45-9, shall be reported in discontinued operations in accordance with paragraph 205-20-45-3 if both of the following conditions are met: 1. The operations and cash flows of the component have been (or will be) eliminated from the ongoing operations of the entity as a result of the disposal transaction. 2. The entity will not have any significant continuing involvement in the operations of the component after the disposal transaction (ASC 205-20-45-1). Several steps below will be used to explain why the disposal of the PSC stores should be considered a continuation of operations rather than discontinue of operations (ASC 205-20-55-3). These three steps along with their respective answers are also depicted in a flow chart (see Appendix A). Step one asks are continuing cash flows expected to be generated by the ongoing entity? Yes, the continuing cash flows are being generated by ABC from transactions with customers from PSC. Step two asks if the continuing cash flows result from a migration or continuation of activities. The continuing cash flows are the result of a migration from the closed PSC’s to the â€Å"one stop† ABC. ABC sells products similar to those sold in the closed retail stores. After the closure of the Pit Stop Centers, Auto World estimates that there will be continuing cash flows from the sale of automotive services and tires by the ongoing ABC’s of approximately $600 million. Auto World estimates that the Pit Stop Centers would have generated approximately $700 million of sales absent the disposal transaction (PSC Case). Step three asks if the continuing cash flows are significant. Yes, the ongoing ABC estimates the continuing cash inflows will approximate 86 percent (see Appendix B) of that would have been generated by PSC’s absent the disposal transaction. AWI is expecting these actions to generate significant cash flow in 2007 and to increase free cash flow in 2008. AWI is also expecting to yield improvements in operating earnings of approximately $58 million in 2008 to be significant leading to the classification as a discontinued operation to be inappropriate (ASC 205-20-55-70). Since stakeholders rely on financial statements to base their decisions and to project future cash flows, current information presented must be accurate under GAAP Under the second requirement, one issue I have identified is the intentions of management’s decisions to improve their company’s net earnings. The professional literature I relied on are these two statements, â€Å"the actions we are announcing today will further enhance our ability to increase market share and improve sales and earnings at our company† and â€Å"in this regard, we remain committed to the automotive business and we expect to deliver significant additional profitable growth† were made by Mr. Bobby, chairman and chief executive officer. When considering the use and disclosure of restructuring charges, depending on the industry, there should not be re-occurring â€Å"restructuring cost† line item on the Income Statement year after year. Closing the PSC stores as of the second quarter in June 2007 is an event taking place in 2007 which can happen only once. If management continues to show this type of special/unusual charge in future periods, the question of integrity should be raised. Management does not want to give off the impression of possibly smoothing earnings by using restructuring charges. â€Å"Once a decision to restructure is made, GAAP requires companies to estimate the future costs they expect to incur to carry out the restructuring for such things as plant closings (AWI currently estimates it will incur restructuring and other charges totaling $52 million pre-tax). These estimated restructuring costs are then charged to an expense account with an offsetting credit to a liability account (Restructuring reserve) in the current period† (Revsine, pg 155). In developing my recommendation and conclusion for resolving this issue, management should make a foot note explaining these changes which will allow stakeholders to make better decisions. The new re-structured ABC will continue to sell automotive parts that were previously sold through the PSC’s, and under the ASC, PSC store closures are not considered and cannot be reported as a discontinued operation in AWI’s second quarter financial statements. The continuing cash flows are being generated by ABC from transactions with customers from PSC, given by the level of significance of 86 percent for this continuing cash flow subsequent to the disposal transaction.

Moulin Rouge and the Disneyfication of the Avant Garde At best Moulin Rouge is a lot of fun. At worst it represents the erasure of history. Moulin Rouge is set in the Paris of 1900--at least ostensibly it is. The actual Paris of 1900 is the Paris of Satie, the Paris of Ravel, of Debussy. The actual Paris of 1900 is the Paris of Matisse, and at least for part of the year, the Paris of Picasso. This is very fertile ground for a love story, a musical, anything, really. Puccini found it good enough for La boheme, after all. What we get in Moulin Rouge, though, is a Paris of 1900 filtered through the myopia of late 20th Century pop culture, especially pop music. We get an anachronistic melange of Madonna and Elton John, of Nirvana and Olivia Newton John. In other words, it isn’t the Paris of 1900. It isn’t even close. Granted, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec shows up as a supporting character and there is, in the film, a nightclub called Moulin Rouge from which the film cribs its title. But other than that, and the ubiquitous absinthe, there’s not much Parisy about Moulin Rouge the movie, much less Paris, 1900. The character of Toulouse-Lautrec speaks vaguely of the â€Å"Bohemian Revolution† but only long enough for the film to make fun of it, and never in enough detail for either a credible manifesto or a credible satire. And, of course, it has to be advocated by Toulouse-Lautrec because Hollywood still thinks dwarves are funny, especially dwarves with lisps. So why does so little of the real Paris of 1900 appear in this film? I have my suspicions that to use, say the music of Erik Satie, would have been too â€Å"challenging† for contemporary audiences. It may have been deemed out of the target demographic of the film, probably â€Å"indie† movie buffs in the 19-30 range whose introduction to the avant-garde was Trainspotting. A movie about a writer in Paris that actually dealt with other writers who were really there, other artists who didn’t have the luck to be born lisping dwarves, would never have been made. I mean, who would go to see it? Old people? The problem, of course, with always making things people can â€Å"relate† to, is that in constantly recycling what we know, we fail to ever learn or be challenged by anything new, even if that thing, new to our experience, is past history.

Organising people to achieve objectives Within our company of facilities management, most of the day to day running is based around organising and delegating tasks to our supply chain. This takes a lot of different considerations as to who we send the tasks to. All of our suppliers are vetted thoroughly through our system before any works can be issued to them. Not only do they have to have the necessary legal information available i.e. insurances etc. but we also have to vet their engineers. We have to ensure they are all CRB check. (Criminal Records Bureau) However, there is also other elements of information we require from them to assist us within day to day running. Suppliers have to identify within their initial registration what disciplines they are able to cover showing that they have engineers with the associated skill sets, qualifications etc. They also have to identify which regions within the country they have coverage for. Once the suppliers have completed their registration form (Please see example attached in appendix) it is sent to a director for approval. Once approved, the supplier will be set up on our system. We as a company then have to ensure that all of the helpdesk staff know exactly what suppliers are on our books, what disciplines they cover and what areas in the country they cover. A client will send a task through  to the helpdesk. This can be via phone, email or portal. A helpdesk member of staff is then expected to ascertain what discipline the task should be logged under and also decide what priority the job should go on. Once this is complete, they then have to send the task to a supplier. This is where the information from the supplier’s registration shows its importance. The helpdesk member would have identified, when logging the task, what the discipline is and what region the site is in. They can then filter through the suppliers to see which is most capable of completing the work satisfactory. Therefore it is extremely important that we make effective and efficient use of the registrations, to ensure we get the task complete effectively through organising and delegating to the suppliers. One technique used to schedule and allocate work to suppliers is our PPM planner. (Planned preventative maintenance programme) This planner is set up for every client to ensure that any assets within the buildings that we look after are registered and maintained on a schedule. This includes compliance items. (Please see example attached in the appendix) When planning these works, we have to identify which supplier is appropriate to be assigned to carry out the works. For example: if we are planning in an annual fire extinguisher test, we need to ensure we use a su pplier who has demonstrated that they have engineers qualified to complete this test providing a compliance certificate where appropriate. This will apply across all disciplines within the planner. Human resources play a very important role within the company. They assure output and quality. They ensure that our any staffs put forward to be a potential candidate appears capable for the position following their curriculum Vitae. They will then identify training and development needs with the staff in the company. Later they will help to conduct appraisals and reviews. Human resources are able to work with KPI implementation within the staff. However, our HR will offer incentives too. Hr will ensure that we have key staff members capable of doing the positions above them. The reason this is important is if a staff member left who was highly dependable upon, we need someone who is capable of slipping in there to cover and so not to leave us exposed. At the same time, this shows that member of staff good promotion aspirations. Human resources are also responsible for protecting the company legally. Ensure that we are all up to date with compliance and legislation. However, it is important to remember  that HR are there to support the employe es as well as the company. Delegating to achieve objectives After supplying the training, recently I delegated the responsibility of a particular task to one of the helpdesk members. I emailed through the lift insurance reports for a client’s estate of 127 buildings. I asked the staff member to take the responsibility of thoroughly reading through the entire reports identifying any defects that have been highlighted. I then instructed the staff member to upload these documents to the assigned buildings. I then instructed them to extract the defects from the report and log them on the system assigning them to the lift supplier. At this time, I also attempted to empower this member of staff by explaining that this will be their responsibility from now on. I went on to explain that by reading these reports, she would learn to understand a bit about lifts and therefore would be able to assist account managers on lift project works. There are sometimes barriers to delegating within my organisation. One of the most common barriers I personally face is a self-imposed obstacle of â€Å"it is quicker and easier to do things myself† this obviously can also be deemed as â€Å"I do not completely trust my employees to get the job done to the expectation†. However, we do have many mechanisms to support delegation within our workplace. Our suppliers are required to sign a contract and SLA (Service level agreement) during the stage of registration. This supports our delegation, expectation to suppliers. To monitor the outcome of this, we conduct contractor/supplier reviews quarterly. We will discuss their SLA’s and KPI’s (Key performance indicator) at this meeting and if necessary, provide support to achieve their best. We also use a similar method for our staff members in the office. They are obviously presented with a contract which includes their job role expectations before the commencement of work. We conduct 6 monthly appraisals with staff to monitor their work. Feedback, recognition and reward techniques are all extremely effective within our workplace. When receiving feedback, normally it is generally very helpful and supported. We will always use good feedback and attempt to elaborate on it and action. Negative feedback can always be very useful also as it gives us areas to improve. We always try to give recognition to our employees where necessary as we have a good history of proving that this is a very  good motivational technique. Obviously by motivating the staff, we are more likely to get their best performance. This motivation also is apparent when using reward techniques. Reward techniques can be a variety of things for example: promotion, new responsibilities, financial rewards etc. All of these prove very effective within the workplace.

About being a Police Officer Essay

If you are interested in becoming a police officer, you must be aware of how tough it is to get the job. You have to go through hard mental and physical screening and training, and for good reason. Police work is a noble career, but it can also be a difficult life. I choose this topic because I know much about it already but I want to learn more because I might end up being in Law Enforcement. Being a Police Officer is not as hard as it looks you having to be fit. To become a police officer, you must pass a fitness test, and you will be required to accomplish various fitness challenges at the police academy. It’s not all action all the time. You will need to write reports of what happened, and those reports must be accurate and detailed because they can be used as evidence in court. The community’s safety is in your hands, and your work will not always be respected. You have to be able to tolerate people not trusting you because of the actions of other police officers, and you may find yourself rebuilding trust on a regular basis. Not only will you work on a daily basis with your partner, but you must also represent the police to the community. Your every action will be under scrutiny, either by your supervisor, your peers or the public at large. This is what I know before I start learning more about being a Police Officer.
